I drove from Jerusalem to the southern Israeli town of Sderot on November 22nd, in the first hours of a ceasefire following eight days of escalated conflict around “Operation Pillar of Defense.” Located less than a mile from the border to Gaza, the town is often the target of rocket and mortar attacks, so much so that a large network of community bomb shelters and bunkers have been built to protect local residents.

Several Days in Sderot

The last week has been so busy that I haven't had the time or energy to blog. The eight days of escalated conflict put me far behind schedule, and I was struggling to get everything done in time for my planned departure this past Sunday.

On Tuesday, I once again teamed up with the amazing Dr. Benjamin Epstein and visited the AMIT Torani Mada'i School in Sderot. The school's director Dina Khoury was kind enough to grant us access to a group of 3rd and 4th grade boys and girls.

Hopes for Peace

While finalizing plans to visit shelters in Sderot tomorrow, I caught UNRWA spokesman Christopher Gunness on Al Jazeera. Chris facilitated my trip to Gaza, and he's been extremely generous with his time. We managed to squeeze in a quick coffee in between his interviews a few days ago.

The Waiting and the Toys

It's been hard to watch the news and wait for whatever comes next. Seeing the death and destruction play out on live TV, I feel powerless. Hearing personal accounts from the friends I've made, I feel worried and guilty for not being there...and perhaps for the relief that I'm not.
